Okra Abbey
Okra Abbey is a community garden and sacred space for the residents of the Pigeon Town neighborhood in New Orleans. It is a garden to grow food to share with the neighbors and also a space where people grow in friendship alongside one another. Okra Abbey is a mission of the Presbytery of South Louisiana and New Worshipping Community of the Presbyterian Church (USA).
Ways you can get involved:
- Metairie Ridge is always collecting nonperishable food items for the community pantry.
- Grace and Greens, a community meal, is every Wednesday at Noon. It is a free meal and a wonderful way to meet the community members.
- The garden is always looking for volunteers to help with harvesting, planting, or maintaining the garden.
Jefferson Presbyterian Church Food Bank
Hunger is a significant problem that affects far too many families. Jefferson Presbyterian Church created a Second Harvest Food Bank to help meet that need in our community. The Food Bank takes place on the first and third Saturday of every month.
Ways you can get involved:
- Volunteer on distribution days.
